In May 1940, during the Battle of France, hundreds of thousands of Allied soldiers have retreated to Dunkirk. Tommy, a young British private, is the sole survivor of a German ambush. At the beach, he finds thousands of troops waiting for evacuation and meets Gibson, who is burying a body. After a German dive-bomber attack, they attempt to get onto a hospital ship by carrying a wounded man on a stretcher, but they are ordered off. The ship is sunk by dive-bombers; Tommy saves another soldier, Alex. They leave at night on a destroyer, but it is sunk by a torpedo from a U-boat. Gibson rescues Tommy and Alex, and they are brought back to the beach.
Dunkirk was a major critical and commercial success. It was praised for its realistic portrayal of war and its focus on the collective effort of the evacuation rather than individual heroics. The film has been credited with reviving interest in the history of the Dunkirk evacuation and has been used as an educational tool in schools and museums. The film relies heavily on visual storytelling rather than dialogue. Nolan wanted to create a visceral experience for the audience, putting them in the middle of the action. The cinematography by Hoyte van Hoytema, shot mostly on IMAX 65mm and 65mm large-format film, provides a sense of scale and immersion.
Nolan decided to make the film as an experimental, non-linear narrative, with three storylines told from different perspectives and over different periods: land (one week), sea (one day), and air (one hour). This structure creates a sense of constant movement and tension.
