The film begins with a high-stakes prison break in Moscow, where Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) is extracted to lead a mission to stop a nuclear extremist codenamed "Cobalt". When a mission to infiltrate the Kremlin goes disastrously wrong and a massive explosion occurs, the IMF is blamed.
